Good Neighbor Fence & Post invites you to check out some frequently asked questions that customers have inquired about over the years. Don’t see the answer to your specific question? No problem, simply contact us directly and we’ll be happy to help!

What size holes do you drill?

We offer a variety of post hole sizes. The typical sizes we offer are 6", 8", 10", and 12" holes, which can vary in depth, depending on your specific requirements.

What does your company use to drill the fence post hole or deck footings?

We use an earth drill to dig fence post holes and deck footings. The equipment is designed to be compact yet powerful.

What size are the fence postholes and how deep do you dig?

We have augers of varying sizes and each one can dig fence postholes or deck footings at varying depths

Can you also set my posts in place for me?

Yes, we can also set your posts up for you. We guarantee a straight and sturdy post with four feet buried in the ground and filled in with concrete.

What is the minimum width needed to get your equipment into my backyard?

We need a minimum of 30” wide in order to safely get our equipment through. If you don’t have that much space, we can look at alternatives like removing gates or posts and then reinstalling afterwards.

Will you supply materials needed for the job?

Our price includes the cement required for the job. However, posts are priced separately and can be provided upon request.

How much will it cost to drill the holes?

We price our drilling as a "per hole" price, or on an hourly basis. Our per hole prices range starting at $25 per hole, depending on the diameter and depth of the holes to be drilled. We give considerable discounts on jobs that require multiple holes (200+).

How long does it take to drill fence post holes or deck footings?

For an average job of about 20 fence post holes or deck footings, we can be done in as little as 90 minutes.

What is a “locate”?

A locate is the name given to the detection, marking, and reporting of buried utility services, such as natural gas pipelines, electrical services, telephone, cable TV and internet, or water and sewer connections. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to contact Ontario One Call to request this free service prior to any drilling. You can do this online or over the phone, toll Free at (1-800-400-2255) 24 hours a day! Depending on where you are located and what service you require, you may have to refer to your utility bill for the number of the locator in your area.

Please remember that this MUST be done before you dig!

How long do I have to wait after you put in the fence posts or deck footings before I can start constructing my project?

It is recommended to wait a minimum of 24 hours before beginning construction, to allow for the concrete to set and harden around your fence posts or deck footings. However, upon request a quick set cement can be used which will allow construction to start within two hours of us completing the fence post holes or deck footings. There will be an additional charge for this service, as the cement is more expensive.

Do I need a building permit for my fence project?

No, you do not need a building permit to dig a hole. However, you should check with your local municipality for any fence height restrictions in your region. Some areas allow for a 6’ fence while others allow 7’. Remember - you MUST contact Ontario One Call to request a free locate!

Do I need a building permit for my deck project?

Please check with your local municipality or contractor for necessary requirements. The main questions would be: the size of the deck, how it is attached to your house and the finished height of the deck (i.e. railing and stair requirements). If the deck is 24” (or lower) above grade, usually a permit is not required. Again, please check with your local municipality for their requirements.

Who will determine the property boundaries?

You, the homeowner, must provide all corner post locations. If you locate the site plan for the house it will provide the measurements for the boundaries relative to the house. We will determine all intermittent post locations.
